Frequently Asked Questions

Policies

This section is a preview of the information that’s included in my client contract. The specific terms will vary by project/client, but this section provides a nice overview of what you can expect if you decide to work with me. Questions? Let me know!

AI Statement

As an editor & writer, I do not use generative AI to produce creative work. Every blog post, webpage, editorial letter, social media post, and story I produce is 100% written by me.

I do however use non-generative AI tools to assist my process.

For example, I use speech-to-text to draft editorial letters and text-to-speech to proofread them. The content is 100% mine, but I am using AI to transmit and edit that work.

I have also used the Marlowe analytical tool created by Authors AI to assess my own creative work. Marlowe is not a generative AI tool and the company has ethically sourced (i.e. paid for) every manuscript used to create their data set. Despite the name, Authors AI aims to help writers without removing humans from the writing process, and while Marlowe can help you with self-editing, she isn’t designed to replace human editors.

Marlowe provides quantitative, data-based insights that are interesting, informative, and effectively impossible for a human to calculate. Marlowe doesn’t do well with subjectivity, which means her work is separate from that of a human developmental editor. You can learn more about Marlowe and how she works here. Also, please note that even though I trust Marlowe with my own manuscripts, I never use AI analytical tools for client work. Ever.

Full disclosure, I have also done consulting work with Authors AI, which is why you’ll see me listed on their website.

Costs

Editing and coaching are priced separately. You can find information about editing services/costs here and coaching services/costs here.

Payment Policies

For projects scheduled for an immediate start (within one week of scheduling), the cost of editing is split into two payments. An initial payment (50% of project price) is due when the contract is signed. The second payment (50% of project price) is due when I return the edited manuscript.

For projects scheduled more than one week in advance, the cost of editing service is separated into three payments. A deposit of 10% is required to hold a place on my calendar for your edit. That deposit is deducted from the total cost. The second payment of 40% is due when you deliver the manuscript. The final payment of 50% is due when I return the edited manuscript (and any other materials covered in the scope of work).

If you purchase a revision strategy session or course via Thrivecart, additional payment options are available and can be found on the sales page for each of these courses.

Forms of Payment

Invoices can be paid via bank transfer, credit or debit card (via Stripe), CashApp pay, PayPal or Venmo.

Manuscript Formatting

All manuscripts submitted for editing & coaching should be formatted as follows:

• 12-pt font, Garamond or Times New Roman

• 1-inch margins

• Double-spaced

• Page numbers, bottom right-hand side

• Clearly mark chapter and scene breaks

Nondisclosure & Confidentiality

I will never share your manuscript or its contents with anyone else. I will also maintain confidentially regarding our working relationship unless given explicit permission to do so (e.g. if you give me a testimonial to use on my website, etc.).

Rescheduling

I will do my best to honor rescheduling requests but cannot guarantee service outside of the timeline specified in our contract.

The first time you submit your manuscript for coaching more than 2 days late, your meeting will be rescheduled (schedule allowing). If you turn in manuscript pages late again, your meeting will be cancelled (no refunds allowed) and we will discuss two sets of manuscript pages at our next coaching meeting if your manuscript pages are turned in on time for the next session.

Refunds

No refunds will be given for completed editorial work. If you are not satisfied with my services, I will make reasonable efforts to find a solution that works for you.

If you pull the manuscript during the editing process, for any reason, I reserve the right to keep the payments you’ve already made (50% of quoted price) and may collect on the balance of the total fee depending on the amount of work already performed.

Coaching requires a significant commitment of time and mental energy. Cancellation policies vary based on the length of the project and where you are in the coaching process. Specific policies will be outlined in your contract to account for manuscript length/coaching timeline/ etc.

Requesting Additional Services

If you decide that you want to add additional editing services to the project, I’m happy to accommodate (schedule allowing). These additional services will be quoted separately and will fall under a separate contract agreement. These services will be billed based on the manuscript word count when work actually begins.

I do not offer critiques of submission packages, marketing materials, book maps, or line editing as individual services. These services can only be purchased as an add on to one of my editing or coaching packages. Not sure my services will meet your needs? Book a call here so we can discuss!

Refusal of Service

I reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. I will not accept material that is derogatory, bigoted, harassing or otherwise offensive.
